William A Yates

William A Yates was the son of Margaret King and Benjamin F Yates. He was born in 1861 in Pope County, Illinois. He is found with his family in the 1870 and 1880 Census records.

Between the 1880 and 1900 Census it has been difficult to track him down.

I have noted this information:

(2) William Yates married to an Angie Yates in the 1900 and 1920 Census.

Both of these men are of similar age and living in the Pope County. I have seen Mahalia in a few family trees on the web.

I think ( and this needs more research) that sometime after the 1880 Census William moved up to Hardin County. I am going to work backwards from his death in 1941 to show why I think this might be our William.

(3) On April 3, 1941 a William Anderson Yates died in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Illinois. His death certificate states that he was born on October 21, 1861 in Pope County, Illinois to Margaret King and Benjamin Yates. This ties him back to our Yates family tree.

William A Yates married Georgia (Mayfield) Stewart on Sept 8, 1889 in Hardin County.

(Side note :

Samuel Stewart married Georgieanna Mayfield on September 18, 1887 in Hardin County, Illinois. Sam died on December 6, 1887 in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Illinois at age 20. )



On October 11, 1889 William Arthur Yates was born in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Illinois. His parents were William Anderson Yates and Georgann Mayfield.

On June 23, 1893 an 11 month old Benjamin W Yates died in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Illinois.


In the 1900 Census William and Georgia A were living in Elizabethtown, McFarlan Precinct, Hardin County, Illinois. They had been married 12 years and had 2 living children. It states that she was the mother of 6 children.

In the 1910 Census they are living in the same precinct and county. Roy E is 10 years and the only child living at home.

In the 1920 and 1930 Census they are still living in the same precinct and county.

On February 18, 1934 Georgia A. Yates died in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Illinois. She was born on May 19, 1867 to Martha Parrot and Isaac Mayfield. Her spouse was William A Yates. She was buried on February 19, 1934 in Elizabethtown Cemetery.
