Elijah McCulley

Elijah McCulley was born September 24, 1879/80 in Union County, Illinois. His parents were Alexander and Delia (Lewis) McCulley. In the 1900 Census he lives with his parents and siblings and works as a farm laborer. The Census states that he was born in Sept 1880 and he is 19 years old.

In the 1910 Census I believe I find him living with the Ballard family and working the farm.

McKulley, Elijah, white, male, single, Illinois (birthplace)

Somewhere between 1915-1920 Elijah married Dora. Two children came from this marriage. He and his brother might have married sisters.

WWI Draft Registration Card:

Elijah McCully lived in Buncombe, Johnson County, Illinois. He was 38 years old and was born September 25, 1879. His present occupation was farming and he worked for a Jas B Suit in Buncombe.  His nearest relative was Dora McCully who lived in Buncombe.

Through an interview with his niece ( Mrs Scivalley ), she recalled the name's of his children as Elizabeth and Evertt. She also remembered that Dora left the marriage and married Elijah's nephew Lonnie Prewitt. Dora and Lonnie moved "up north." Elijah never remarried and worked at farming all his life. He spent his elderly years in a nursing home in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois. He was buried in Casper Cemetery.

Through an interview with his great niece, she remembers this:

Elijah came to the back door when she was a girl, she did not know who he was, so she just offered him a plate of food. Her mother would often feed people who came to her back door. Later she found out that he was her great uncle.

In the 1930 Census, Elijah is listed as living with his son and mother.

Questions - More Research

1. I noted a marriage in Union County between Elig(z)e L McCulley and Laura McCracker. I have not got the chance to research further.

2. Marriage and/or death certificate might give a little more information about his parents.
