Charlotte "Lottie" Oxford

Charlotte "Lottie" Oxford was born around 1818 in Tennessee. I believe her mother's name was Sarah.

On September 22, 1836 she married Levi Lewis in Union County, Illinois. Nine children came from this union.

In he 1850 Census she is with her husband and children in District 2, Union County, Illinois.

She is mentioned in the 1856 Probate Record of her husband Levi Lewis.

On June 4, 1860 she married Wiley Cox in Union County, Illinois. In that same year the 1860 Census shows her and Wiley living with her children in Township 12, Union County, Illinois. He is a 55 year old farmer who owned $1200 worth of real estate and $100 worth of personal estate.

This is the only year I can find information on William "Wiley" Cox. He is reported as a purchaser of sale in James Lewis's Probate Record in 1860.

In the 1865 Illinois Sate Census Charlotte Cox is found living in Stokes, Union County, Illinois.

By the 1870 Census Charlotte is back to the Lewis surname. She is living in Stokes, Union County, Illinois in house 257/250.

In the 1880 Census she is living with her grandson Absolem Lewis in Stokes, Union County, Illinois. In this census she is recorded as a widow. Absolem is 10 years old.

It is interesting to note that she is living in house number 243 and two of her sons live down the road.  Samuel is living in house number 246 with his wife and daughter. William is living in house number 248 with his wife and daughter.

In the 1900 Census she has both her children Samuel and Lucinda back living with her in the Saratoga Precinct, Union County, Illinois. Charlotte is the head of the house and noted as a farmer. She owns her own farm. It states that she is 81 years old. She has given birth to 9 children, with 4 still living. Samuel is widowed and Lucinda is single.

It is interesting to note that her daughter Delia is living with her family right next door to Charlotte.

On February 1, 1907 Charlotte "Lottie" Lewis died in Lick Creek, Union County, Illinois. She died of pneumonia.  Her death certificate states that she is 103 years old which is about 15 years off her true age. It states that she has lived in Illinois for 75 years ( making it just a few years before she married Levi).

Her death certificate states that she was buried in the Sitter Cemetery, Union County, Illinois, on February 2, 1907.


Note: There appears to be a Charlotte Lewis in the Cobden area and in Pope County. As this time I can not find a connect between our Charlotte and their families.

1. Information on Charlotte before her marriage and her parent's names.

2. I think Levi and Charlotte lived in Missouri in the 1840's. A few of her children state on census reports that they were born in that state. I can not find their family in Illinois in the 1840 Census.
