James Lewis

James Lewis was the son of Samuel and Mary (unknown) Lewis. He was born around 1811/ 1819 in either Tennessee or Kentucky.

He is listed as a child and heir to his father's estate in January 1830.

James Lewis married Nancy Ann Connel on February 25, 1841 in Union County, Illinois.

In the 1850 Census he is living in District 2, Union County, Illinois.

I am not sure who these 2 girls are or if they are related to the Lewis family.


From the book Union County Illinois Probate Records by Darrel Dexter I found the following:

Lewis, James died 10 Jun 1860

Administrator: Alexander J Nimmo, $4,400 bond, 18 June 1860, with Daniel G Standard and William Lewis as securities.

Appraisers: Charles Crowell, Levi White and William Anderson.

Land: Northeast quarter of the southeast  quarter and the southeast quarter of  the southeast quarter section 9, township 12 south range 2 west, 43 acres worth $174.

Debts: HC Hacker, $20 for medical attention 9-10 June 1860.  C. H. Williford, $7 for a coffin.

Sale: $1771.10; 10-11 Jul 1860; JH Samson, clerk; William Noble, crier.

Heirs: Nancy Ann Bass, widow, recieved *27.06; children: Mary Ellen Barker ( born 6 Jan 1849, married Tilburn W Barker), James C ( or James M) Lewis (born in May 1851), Samuel Lewis (born in 1852) and Eliza J ( or Nancy Jane) Lewis ( born 22 Jan 1859 or 1860, married Thomas A Jackson), received $413.53 each.

William Lewis was appointed guardian of James and Samuel on 18 Apr 1864, after making a $2000 bond with Thomas Tripp and John Dougherty as securities.

James M Abernathie was appointed guardian 1866.

In 1874, Nancy asked that William C Holt of Stoddard County, Missouri, be appointed her guardian. She stated that she was pregnant and that her husband was young, poor and unable to provide for her.

Other Notes

His widow, Mrs Nancy Lewis married Amos Bass on March 26, 1863 in Union County, Illinois.

His daughter Mary Lewis married William Barker on August 20, 1863 in Union County, Illinois.
